MTG Open House & Ribbon cutting September 12, 2018"Combined Ribbon Cutting and partnerships between Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity Mending The Gap Navigate Recovery Gwinnett and Lawrenceville Coop ensures a superb support system for Gwinnett county families. “Great things happen when the generations work together to serve the less fortunate senior citizens in our community and that’s why we’re here,” said Fay Josephs, the founder and executive director of Mending the Gap, Inc., during an open house and ribbon cutting event on September 8th. Mending the Gap, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit based in Lawrenceville, GA. The organization is one of four nonprofits (Lawrenceville Co-op, Navigate Recovery and Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity) working together in a unique ministry community in the building on 52 Gwinnett Drive in Lawrenceville. The open house event started with a welcome and introduction from the leaders of each of the four participating organizations, included a blessing of the building and culminated with a joint ribbon cutting. The event was well attended by citizens and leaders across the community including Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson. The attendees were then invited to tour the spaces and connect with each organization individually to learn more about their respective work.Mending the Gap, Inc.’s mission of inspiring youth and enriching the lives of older adults is simple but unique as most organizations focus on one demographic. The organization accomplishes its mission by offering basic needs support, companionship and opportunities for intergenerational collaboration and engagement. Working in social services for over 13 years, founder Fay josephs was often face to face with senior citizens in our community doing their best to survive but in desperate need of help. Her passion to help young people was fueled by mentoring young girls and battered women. After several years, in 2010, Fay figured out how to connect her two passions and thus Mending the Gap, Inc. was born. Through donations, sponsorships and volunteer support, Mending the Gap, Inc. has managed to consistently feed over 200 lower-income senior citizens and counting. The organization also facilitates phone calls and visits in an attempt to alleviate isolation and loneliness, hosts fun activities to encourage physical activity and teach basic computer skills. The youth volunteers learn leadership skills, empathy, patience, kindness and how to work in teams. These characteristics have a lifetime value.
